About Sikhism For All
Sikhism For All
Sikhism For All is a not-for-profit project carried out as sewa (selfless service) with the aim of raising awareness of Sikhism amongst the English-speaking public and making the teachings of the Sikh Gurus accessible in English, thereby helping to bring Sikhism in English to all those who are interested.
Sikhism is a universal spiritual path intended for all humanity from its very origins, transcending cultures, peoples and nations. However, to date the vast majority of Sikhs are of Punjabi origin, which has often led to Sikhism being perceived as a tradition linked to Punjabi culture, as if it were open only to people of this specific ethnicity and culture.
This project aims to dispel the notion that Sikhism belongs to a specific people or culture, whilst helping to understand Sikhism in its universal dimension, distinguishing between the teachings specific to the Sikh tradition and those practices or customs that belong to the cultural sphere of a specific people.
Sikhism For All presents Sikhism in accordance with the teachings set out in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the tradition handed down by the Ten Gurus. This initiative is orthodox and adheres to the Sikh Rehat Maryada; it is independent and has no connection whatsoever with organisations such as 3HO or Sikh Dharma International, their offshoots associated with Kundalini Yoga and Yogi Bhajan, or traditions such as Namdhari or Radha Soami; and it is inspired by the spirit of the Singh Sabha Movement of Lahore, which in its time promoted the revival and clarification of Sikhism based on the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, free from external influences of other religions outside Sikhism, idolatrous interpretations or superstitions that run counter to Sikh doctrine, and also by rationally analysing popular devotional legends that do not form part of its doctrine per se.
In this regard, the project clearly upholds the fundamental principles of Sikhism, including the equality of all human beings. Sikhism rejects any form of discrimination based on birth or social origin. The caste system, which stems from Hinduism and is deeply rooted in the culture of the Indian subcontinent, is incompatible with the Guru’s teachings on the equality of all humankind.
This project aims to make a modest contribution towards enabling more and more people to learn about Sikhism as taught by the Sikh Gurus: a spiritual path based on remembering God, living honestly and sharing with others.
